Integrated and Intelligent Industrial Management of Aircraft EoL Optimizing Circularity of Strategic Metal Parts

The PLANUM project is dedicated to the dismantling and recycling of end-of-life aircraft.

The goal is to develop an innovative industrial sector in Wallonia capable of extracting value from complex resources (in this specific case, materials from end-of-life aircraft), while addressing the challenges of the circular economy.

In this context, GeMMe has developed an automated line for the characterization and intelligent sorting of metal streams, focusing in particular on aluminum alloys and titanium from the aerospace industry.

This facility combines multi-sensor technology (3D vision, hyperspectral imaging, X-rays, LIBS), artificial intelligence, and robotics to direct each material toward the most suitable recycling pathway, aligned with industrial needs.

The project also highlights the challenges associated with composite materials (particularly their characterization and sustainable recovery) and the importance of establishing circular supply chains today for current and future generations of aircraft.
